aquietjune | A first post and an introduction

So, um, hello.

I've been debating whether to try participating in fandom on Dreamwidth for about two months now. Yes, since November 2022; yes, it's not accidental. But I'll talk about my discontent with Twitter in a later post.

Right now, I want to start things here by introducing myself, so that I can start participating. I've been looking at random communities from time to time in the last few months, and I've always been amazed at how active and engaged the community as a whole is here. I didn't think it was possible, not after all this time on social media. Mind, I've been on LiveJournal, once, albeit briefly; I've run my fan fiction archive; I posted my stuff on FFnet when AO3 wasn't around yet. I've seen things. Then I went away. When I came back in 2020 (again: it's not accidental), I accepted that fandom had changed, and that for my current fandom, the reason I came back, it was either Twitter or Reddit.

And you know...

Oh, well.

So, here I am, aquietjune. I usually create stuff for just one fandom at a time. Since my current fandom -- Attack on Titan -- looks mostly asleep here, I postponed this moment for a long time, but then, discovering the snowflake_challenge (yeah, no idea of what it was two days ago), I decided that if there was a moment to give it a go, this is it. Besides, there are so many stories that I love, and so many things that I like to do... I don't think I won't find correspondence here. What do you think?

Answering the questions of Challenge#1, in a conversational manner, to cover some bases.

Transformative Works Policy: See, now I feel like an illiterate -- coming from my fandom on Twitter, I didn't even know this was a thing. I care about these topics, but I want to learn more about the culture here before I copy-paste something that may not represent me. In general, however, for me contributing to the fandom means sharing my ideas and my world-building, and if someone finds them so enticing that they would like to use it I'm overwhelmed with joy.
Current Passion: Since July I've been working on a longfic about Annie Leonhart. I first write, then publish, and despite many shortcomings due to other commitments, I'm at around 85k words now. I'm so looking forward to writing certain scenes, and discovering what happens in the interstices of the narrative. This project has me very excited.

Other than that, in the past weeks I've read all the currently available chapters of Oshi no ko by Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari, and my, I can't wait till April when the anime comes out. It has a lot of what I like, a lot of focus on the inner workings and dark side of show business and a lot of fun, engaging drama.

I knew of Aka Akasaka already, but I never read nor watched his Kaguya-Sama: Love is War before. Well, now I'm doing that. It has great comedy and I'm enjoying it very much.

I'm currently preparing the costume for a LARP I'm playing next month. It's rushed, it's complicated, and I haven't figured out the totality of it yet, but the process is fun, and that is what matters.

Master List: This is another thing I'm not really prepared for. I have a chronological master list of my fics on Tumblr, but since they're all Attack on Titan and they're all in the same timeline (for now), you can also head directly to my AO3 I think -> aquietjune
Anything Else: I embroider, I sew toys and ragdolls, I'm passionate about books -- classic and postmodernist literature, gothic and liminal horror -- and many other forms of stories, especially of the ARG/Unfiction kind. I have a bizarre taste for things and interests that are worlds apart. I like trivia and learning how things work.

Hi! Yes, sorry, I wanted to comment before subscribing but I was in a hurry and wanted to "put a pin" on it so I subscribed. Thanks for adding me. I'm happy there are other SnK fans here :) The fandom mainly lives on Twitter and that's not always a positive. I want a place for slower, more good-faith conversations. Are you looking forward to part 3.1? (Armin is my definite fave but I like a lot of other characters, both those deeply explored by the narrative -- Reiner -- and not -- Pieck.)

And yes, I like horror! Mainly in movies and transmedial experiences (ARGs and the like), but in books too (I'm tentative here because I always find it difficult to articulate the kind of horror books I like -- it's a bit of a continuous quest. I usually dabble in more "liminal" stuff, so it's by trial-and-error because it's for books that are not marked as horror, like Picnic at Hanging Rock. The last one I read is A History of Fear by Luke Dumas and it was ok.) What kind of horror do you like?

Ah, I'm sort of? active on Twitter but the way I use it is for news, fanart and scenery pics. TBH the fandom convos started to go downhill when Tumblr became a thing. I enjoy Reddit when talking about anime or mangas in general sense.

I'm definitely looking forward to part 3.1! I love all the characters, warriors and 104th alike but I have a weakness for Armin, Eren, Reiner and Jean. I love Pieck too! Even though she doesn't get as much screen time as the others, she felt like a fully fleshed out character, same with Porco.

Interesting, I had no idea horror had different sub genres. I think, I liked the Little Nightmares series, in terms of games and Oxenfree. But Little Nightmares is a huge inspiration when I write horror fics because it has no dialogue but you feel the tension in it.

Books, it's a mixture of manga and actual literature. I discovered magic realism and surrealism orginated in South America, so I've actually started with South American authors first. My fave is Mariana Enriquez's The Dangers of Smoking in Bed, a collection of short stories with heavy emphasis on surrealism. I did read PTSD Radio, a manga series based on a neglected god-- it's also got short stories in it.

I'm into Fantasy as well and I like blending it with Slice of life and Horror. My fave author is Peter Beagle and his work, "The Last Unicorn" and the anime movie, "Wolf Children."

Oh, I really like Mariana Enriquez! By her, I read "Things we've lost in the fire" and some other loose stories. I'm tempted by her newer (or newly-published? I didn't check) novel but I'm a bit afraid because it's on the longer side and I can't commit to very long narratives at the moment. Horror-non-horror writers I like from South/Central American countries are: Samantha Schweblin (Fever Dream, not Little Eyes), Cristina Rivera Garza (The Iliac Crest) and (older) Amparo Davila and Silvina Campo. Not counting Leonora Carrington but of course Leonora Carrington is everything.

I only know him by name! For fantasy, my absolute favorite is probably Diana Wynne Jones, although I haven't been reading a lot of hers lately (and maybe not a lot of fantasy overall? My I lost count on everything -__-)

I'm so glad to find another reader with similar taste in genres though! I'll be happy to chat about it.

!!! I'm actually trying to get that one from the library but it only has the e-book version rn. I placed her newer one on hold. I'll take a look at the other authors you suggested. My goodreads is mireailles if you have an account there.

Peter Beagle is pretty much my everything rn. I've also heard of Diana Wynne Jones, I read Howl's Moving Castle, my unpopular opinion is that I liked the book better than the Ghibli Movie lol. My fave quote from The Last Unicorn is, "I know you, if I were blind, I'd know what you are."
