And we're back for another week of The Apothecary Diaries! This is another episode of setup, and as many mysteries are starting to pop up in the rear palace, the story presented here doesn't really work as a standalone piece.

Still, many elements of note. This is the Maomao Sniffs Clothes Episode, after all:

The goal: be concise, to the point, and offer thoughts that can generate discussions.

Snowflake Challenge #3: In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time.

Being a "fan" doesn't have a specific aesthetic or a specific way of doing things.

Snowflake Challenge #5: Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.

Definitely my knowledge and mastery of language, as well as foreign languages, and of many other things (skills, crafts, and pure notion-based knowledge). ( Read more... )

Snowflake Challenge #6: Share your favourite piece of original canon.

I don't know if I interpreted this challenge right, but I won't talk about a canon in general but a piece of it. Still, I will twist this a bit: it's not so much what I like about a certain canon, but a certain aspect that makes me enjoy a canon a lot more.

I am a live-action role-player (larper). Since I've started with this activity, I've found that the thing I enjoy the most is the rendering of atmosphere, or rather: my style of play is "immersionist". I care about quests very little, and limitedly about story and character arcs, as long as I'm made to inhabit the very specific fictional time and place we get to play in. It can be the local pub of a small village in the 1980s, or an underground bunker 100+ years after nuclear collapse: if I can sit down in a corner, or navigate corridors, and think "Oh, I am actually here!" then... I won the LARP.

Snowflake Challenge #7: In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a wishlist of sorts.

Not big on asking for things, but I'll try:

(snowflake_challenge #4)

The new year is having a quiet and slow start for me: while I want to do many things, I feel that my enthusiasm for creating stuff is a muffled voice in the background while my mind is occupied with other things--obligations and business that I need to tend to or will hang indefinitely over my head for the next months, a bit of uncertainty on what I am to expect out of this year. Going back to work certainly didn't help.

More than that, I've had a few months of writer's block, or rather, lack of motivation that turns into deep dissatisfaction (or open, desperate struggle) when I end up writing anyway. Since I've had one such moment yesterday, I do feel a bit blue.

It is okay--I don't have to do anything, and it's also okay not to have writing goals for now. Last year went well writing-wise, and I reached my goals of joining fic exchanges and fan events and participating in them, and there I discovered that
( Read more... )

And that's even better thinking that there are more things that I want to do this year: play more ttrpgs and other games (both digital and analogic), read more non-fiction and literary fiction, trying to crochet more garments and learning how to make them fit well, continuing to learn sashiko while also going back to embroidery (I miss it! I haven't managed last year, in the end), and, possibly, crafting at least one paper-or-paint-adjacent work.

Free time is, after all, limited, and I'd better use it to have fun.

(A bit of a downer of a post? I hope not to much. To you who read, best of luck with your 2025 goals, and with being well most of all!)

Where does fandom start and where will it start tomorrow? (Snowflake Challenge #2, Fannish Fifty)

Also my first entry to this year's Fannish Fifty on goals_on_dw.

I wasn't feeling particularly eager to discuss my fannish beginnings at first--having been a child in the 90s, there is only so much I can say about afternoon children programming on TV including anime and later, through a very rugged dial-up connection, my search for those very same anime on the Internet, finding hard-to-navigate seiyuu databases (still a mystery to me), fansites full of images that I could download and print, and finally, discovering fan fiction and fan art. For me that anime was Slayers (coincidentally, just like my current fave, an anime adapted from a light novel series), but with the same or another title that could represent the experience of many of my peers.

Not that responding to this question required originality at all--I get that in truth, there is as much to find in the things we have in common than the things in which we are different, in this community--but then again, what do I have to say?

Then yesterday, while I was thinking about glossing over it, focusing on my return to fandom, maybe, I happened to read this interesting article about fanfiction getting consumed more and more like any other piece of media, and less like the expression of a specific context of a specific subculture, that of fandom linked by the always insightful The Rec Center.

That's it for now. Thanks for reading such a long post and for being willing to consider these issues!

The prompt for Challenge #2 was:

In your own space, set yourself some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This year is going to be challenging in many ways, so for my fannish and crafty activities, other than a couple of things I'm already very committed to (and are ongoing), I'd rather talk about random things I'd like to do this year, with no priority set.

( Exactly three goals, or: the ongoing projects )

And as for more things I'd love to do, but with no strings attached and no expectations, in no order:

( All the things! )

And that's it for now!

Update, out of breath and out of time

Lately I've been pretty busy with working on the revision and the publication of the very long and very demanding multi-chaptered Attack on Titan fic I've talked about before in this journal. It's called Little Bird, it's about Annie Leonhart post-Canon (pre-final timeskip), it's pretty angsty, contains bad bureaucrats, fairy tales, ghost stories, decadent aristocrats and their cats, romance, funny banter... and silly names.

If you're now caught up with AOT, I'd love to hear what you think.

In September/October I also joined a fic exchange as a pinch hitter! For that I wrote Respite, or A Survivor's Ball, a Connie Springer-centric oneshot. I had a lot of fun.

I'd love to talk extensively about the end of Attack on Titan (as in: the anime adaptation), and maybe I will do so at some point, but generally speaking: it's great, it's been great, I'm grateful I could witness the final episode as it aired, and if you never watched AOT, or if you watched season 1 back then and then lost enthusiasm because of the waiting (or the very long-winded Uprising Arc in the manga, as it happened with me), I recommend to give it a go. It's not perfect, but it's still a great story, with a lot of great characters and themes to enjoy.

Right now, I'm out of breath and always running out of time because... let's say, updating the fic once a week, even if it's already fully written (but in need of revision, consistency checks, proofreading, as well as some additional scenes), is more effort-taking than planned ^^''' In fact, I managed to write here today just because I took a week off.

I usually use Tumblr to give updates about my revision process because the aot fandom is more there than here.

You can see them under the little bird tag, which also includes the funny faux period graphics I do for every chapter (another thing that... takes a lot of time. I can't really help myself).

( Example of graphics here )

Still, I check my reading page at DW daily, and I wish to join some winter festivities event (fandomtrees possibly) as well as being more consistent with update frequency and also... quality? Cut?

Last week I've read The Unauthorized Biography of Ms.Scribe and other than being incredibly captivated by the narrative I also thought about journaling as an art in the field of writing (and self-reflecting, and whatever) that I'd love to learn.

What I'm doing right now is just listing fannish and fannish-adjacent things I've been doing in no order. Which is ok, but also not the standard or the form that would motivate me to post consistently.

But just to confirm that this is my format atm, anime fall season 2023:

( Read about anime here )

Ah well. For the rest, I'm reading and I'm enjoying what I read, which is the greatest thing. Among the latest books I read, The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enriquez (who is also very funny and endearing in person).

The usual cumulative post about my writing & other random things.

First of all, while I haven't finished the full revision, I'm starting posting my Annie Leonhart-centric fanfic this week. The first chapter is ready, I polished what I could polish, the beta-reading happened... I need to let go of it.

I even posted a snipped from it. (Contains spoilers for the ending of Attack on Titan, I guess.)

Now I'm feeling all so giddy about it, because overall I'm really excited about this story--and I'm excited because it contains things that extremely fun to me; I think about it and I smile to myself, and even chuckle, and everything. Having being able to finish writing the story, even in its half-revised state: this is such a great accomplishment.

As usual, this is the most important thing to remember.

( Ranting and some spoilers )

Speaking of other things, now.

Media

I'm so very excited for the last episode of Attack on Titan airing on November 4th. If you never started watching it because it wasn't finished, at least now I can say: heh, you have about 2 months to catch up with it--88 episodes? Do it. It's going to be fun.

Wary but still curious about the new AoT project that will be announced on October 4th. Although... it may just be a re-edition, a silly mobile game, or a spin-off nobody will care about, so... no expectations.

I've fallen behind with Link Click, My Happy Marriage and Undead Murder Farce lately, mainly because I was traveling. I'm glad I have a lot to catch up with.

I dreamt the episodes leading to the ending of Monster by Naoki Urusawa... when I haven't watched them yet. Yes, I invented it. It looks like I need to go back to it as well.

Oh, Dead souls by Gogol was really the perfect (audio)read for this summer. Familiar, yet refreshing, and so, so funny.

Other things

After many years mostly traveling only to go to games, and spending the summer holidays resting at home, I finally made a long-distance and a long-awaited long trip this year, and in a context I never considered feasible for me (group tour with people I never met before).

A few takeaways:

Crafts

Finally, Games

I can't say I'm unhappy at the moment. I guess this is good, heh?

I hope you're having a good time as well.

Thanks for reading, and to the next one.

comments

It’s August, which means that I am meant to start the revision of my longfic. I don’t feel ready, but it relieves me to think that the other day I opened up the project to look up some information for a connected oneshot and I liked what I read.

( on the july break bingo )

Anyway, here's the two entries I've made: triple drabble (shingeki no kyojin, not really spoilerish), set of mini-collages (original work). (Maybe I should post my card, too. One day before the cutoff date? Lol.)

More on writing:

In the past week, since dewladen talked about it, I’ve been using the 4thewords app to write, and while I’m really bad at these gamified experiences I found it quite useful for what I was doing (technical game writing with set lengths to achieve). Let’s see if I can also use it in other settings, especially given that I want to be more careful with the number of words that I put out (but there are also challenges for that, I think).

Also: I joined the comment_bingo for this round! Here is my card.

Media!

( Media updates )

( Reflective, albeit more hopeful stuff regarding my most recent rant about fandom )

On the other hand, while I haven't had the time to experience a lot of media in the past few days (travelling), some random comments about stories and more things:

The Phantom of the Opera (ALW musical) still remains nonsensical in a very funny and enjoyable way. Enjoyable expecially for the fact that it's all good singing. Then, wtf-productions appears out of nowhere, and we appreciate them. We can only appreciate.

I went to a theatre museum and the most majestic thing I saw was a travelling wardrobe, which included hangers, drawers and all, used by (probably?) a theatre actress. The world is a place full of wonders.

The first two episodes of My Happy Marriage (anime on Netflix) were good and I'm on board. I only need the will not to look for the light novel/manga in the meantime.

First episode of Undead Murder Farce: I'm intrigued but not as much as I would like to. Too early to say, though.

I still hope for some progression in Spy x Family (manga). Mind, I just enjoy it and that's enough, but... a little progression? Please?

I bought another book by William T. Vollman, An Afghanistan Picture Show. I hope it's a good one, although maybe I would fare better with another of his Seven Dreams.

I'm trying to listen to new music. The Rika playlist facethestrange once shared is very useful and very in line with what I want. Thank you!

I started working on a collaborative writing project, something something vampires (not the name, but I must stay quiet for now I think). Vampires!

But most of all, as a palate cleanser before going into the revision of my longfic, I joined the julybreakbingo. Be it writing or embroidery I hope I can create something fun and different.

Like a travelling wardrobe.

(The travelling wardrobe in question.)

The big news is that I reached the end of my story—the fic I have been writing for exactly a year, that is, has its first draft completed, minus for half a scene and a fictional text I can’t bring myself to finish right now.

160k words.

( Rant about writing and the fandom and my self-worth )

Let’s move on; there’s not so much time for that. Because yep, I have other things to do, not even counting IRL stuff:

( Other projects, still a bit melancholic )

Thanks for reading this mainly-a-rant post. I really wanted to write here again, but I needed to get this out first—the rest of the summer starts now, and it’s going to be exciting.

Other media things:

( Anime, manga, tv, books )

It wasn't my intention to disappear for more than a month; as I might have said before, my plan was to give DW a 3-months try to see if it was fit my flow of writing, communicating, etc.

Then ~~life~~ work happened and I got a bit lost, but I'm still here, I promise! And since I haven't been able to write here for a while my plan now is to... extend my DW trial.

Heh.

Some brief updates:

Writing:

Games, cosplay:

General:

Media:

And that's all for now. I'm still not out of the woods but I'll try to participate often, in some capacity at least.
Be well!

I had a rather busy week at the beginning of February, but I’m glad I can now sit down for some updates.

( Costumes, LARPing )

Lots of very interesting conversations around stories on the road trip to the game, in fact. Two interesting points:
( Conversations about stories )

Having said this, some updates on my writing:
( I'm still writing! )

In other stories:
( Stories I've been reading, watching, planning on experiencing etc. )

In the next few days I hope to catch up with comments & posts. In the meantime, thanks for reading.
