Just write! (Snowflake Challenge #8)

As life is pretty exhausting (mentally, more than anything) right now, I haven't been able to participate much in the snowflake_challenge although I very much wanted to.

Challenge #8 has just come out and I have about half an hour. Can I make it count?

If I used my Dreamwidth journal in any way this past year, it was to keep my mind set on the objective of finishing and starting publishing a longfic I've been working on with consistency since July 2022.

I've talked about it extensively: it's an Attack on Titan fic called Little Bird, about the character of Annie Leonhart. All is well.

I will talk about something related to it: a series of images I'm making chapter after chapter to "promote" the chapter publication. Since the story is set in an alternative late 1910s-early 1920s era, I take graphical works from the period (advertisements, book covers or frontispieces, product labels, but also working documents like cadastre files) and I edit them to talk about something else entirely -- my story. Possibly with a lot of irony.

I already shared a favorite of mine, the frontispiece to a manual of etiquette for ladies in society, but this time I'll share a more recent one (the last one, since I hadn't been able to make one for the latest chapter yet :')), a label for canned cabbage (I don't think I have to reveal to you the origin of it, in the sense that's blatantly obvious):

I'm learning plenty of things about how photo editing and such, and it makes me very proud. (But yes, it takes a lot of time.)

As a consequence of 1), I'm learning (or re-learning? I don't know) how to make DW icons. I'm not very active here, and yet I find it enjoyable to play with images while I'm feeling lazy. The icon you see on this post is one of the new ones. Pretty basic, yet I like it a lot.

Latest WiP, another AoT oneshot about a haunted house (what a novel concept!). As usual, it started as a small endeavor, and now that I've outlined the scenes... well, I want to get to the end of this, and not letting it haunt me like many other WiPs that I have.

And that's it for now!

i don't know attack on titan at all (i mean i know what it is, i've just never seen any of it) but your graphics idea is so cool and the canned cabbage label looks really good. i like the etiquette manual too - the design is early 20th century but the text really, really isn't.

you don't want your oneshot about the haunted house to haunt you? :D good luck with it!

Thank you so much -- yes, I enjoy putting funny texts where they shouldn't be. (The running cat is the best thing I've ever found in the British Library open image collection).

And yes, the haunted house fic is still haunting me, of course...

I loooove your graphics for this story - they look amazing! I never learned to make icons and so I take my hat off to you. They're so very cool, and my collection of icons from my LJ days is a lovely trove of nostalgia :D

Hey! I got some rest but I'm as lazy as ever -- I'm trying to get some writing done but who knows.

I dabbled in graphics before, but only understanding very little of it. Now I think I'm doing... a bit better! But it still is a journey, and as with all things graphics... it takes time...

The chapter promotions are a neat idea. I like the one that you shared - pretty colors and it goes together well. It's cool that you're learning new things too!

Ayyy another attack on titan person! Did you write that postwar Connie fic about the death of Sasha and a whole lot otherwise in (the name of the exchange forgets me right now)? I loved that. My own project revolves around Attack on Titan fic as well, though it's Hange-centric. Also that graphic looks so nice - good for you for taking on some new challenges along with the writing project!

Helloooo fellow aot fan writer! Yes, I definitely wrote a post war Connie fic for an exchange (traumaex) -- I'm glad if you enjoyed it! Love Hange, canon definitely does not go deep enough into the character (but we got good bits). Good wishes for your writing project!

TBH while some things in canon make me cranky, I think Hange has one of the most cohesive and powerful arcs in the whole manga, so I am fortunate. Thanks for the kind wishes!

Oh that's neat! I actually used to do graphics for ship weeks but I got too perfectionist-y on it and it became overwhelming. Some tips I can share are: colouring sheets can be saved as brushes and used as cool backgrounds, gradients are fun to use as well, especially custom ones. There's places to get art/background scenery that's properly sourced ie Pixabay, etc. All my icons are self-made too lol.
